Anorexia is commonly found to affect girls and young women. Women suffering from this illness have an intense fear of gaining weight. This mental state causes girls and young women to starve their bodies. As with other mental diseases and or addictions, Anorexia is used by its victim to feel an increased level of control over life and also to help ease or escape social pressure. Some of the factors that can lead to this behavior are the following:
- Genetics and hormones
- Culture
- Examples (a women that has observed a family member with the disorder)
- Poor self esteem
- Stressful events or changes
Anorexia can lead to bulimia and other eating disorders. Anorexia, also, causes other medical conditions appear in its victims. The following are some of the medical conditions brought on by the eating disorder Anorexia:
- Osteoporosis
- Permanently stunted growth
- Irregular heartbeat
- Mineral loss
- Shrinking bones
- Low body temperature
